CEREC Restorations are the latest form of porcelain restorations being made by utilizing a new technology called CAD-CAM (Computerized Assisted Design- Computerized Assisted Milled).
The tooth is prepared, removing all decay and an impression is taken. If the conventional impression is taken it will be poured into stone and than either imaged directly or have a small coating of the titanium dust to help with the imaging. The imaging is optical and uses an infrared wavelength.
This image is converted to a format that the computer understands and an image appears on the TV-screen for the dentist to use in designing the restoration. After the design has been approved the computer information is sent to the milling (Cutting) station which will sculpt the restorative material to fit the design (Tooth and Bite).
After the restoration is checked for fit, color and harmony with the tooth and body, the restorative material (as is the tooth) is then prepared to the manufacturer’s specification (acid etched, silaned, Bonded, etc.) to be made “sticky” to the cement being used. The Cerec restoration is then permanently joined to the tooth. This is all accomplished within one appointment from start to finish and all within the dental office. You can leave with your crown that same day!

If you have a tooth that is need of a dental cap, whether the tooth broke or has an existing filling that is large and needs replacing, you do have a choice in how the dental crown is made. There are two ways in which a dental crown can be made, by a lab, or by CEREC.
The most obvious advantage of CEREC dental crowns is the speed in which it is made. CEREC crowns are fabricated and cemented in one appointment. Traditional lab fabricated dental crowns take up to 2 weeks to be made and cemented. What does this mean for you? With CEREC crowns you are done in one visit to the dentist, with lab fabricated crowns it will take at least two appointments and sometimes more.
With CEREC crowns, since the final crown is finished that day, you do not have to deal with temporary crowns. Temporary crowns are made of a plastic material that are made while the permanent crown is fabricated. Temporary crowns have a tendency to fall off because a weak cement is used in order to remove it when the permanent crowns are seated. This can lead to additional visits to the dentist to have it recemented. Also, temporary crowns do not fit perfectly, this can lead to sensitive teeth while the temporary crown is in your mouth.
CEREC crowns do not require impressions. You know, the goopy, nasty tasting stuff us dentists use to make molds of your teeth. Instead, CEREC uses a special camera to take optical images of the teeth, the computer then constructs a digital model of your teeth in which the dental crown is designed The optical image is captured and CEREC computer makes a digital model of the teeth in which the dental crown is designed. A crown fabricated with CEREC is about convenience. One stop and the final restoration is done!
CEREC Single Visit Crowns
In the past, a cosmetic dentistry procedures such as veneers and porcelain crowns used to require you to have at least two visits to your dentist. Aside from that, you also need to wait for a certain period of time before your dental restorations can be made- typically 2 to 3 weeks.
Thanks to the newest CEREC technology, restoring the normal appearance of your teeth is easy. You can now enjoy the convenience of having custom-fitted porcelain crowns, veneers and fillings in just a single visit.
What is CEREC?
CEREC stands for Chairside Restoration of Esthetics Ceramics. The primary aim is to give the patients the choice of having their dentistry completed in one visit, not 2 or 3. The result is a number of cosmetic dental restorations completed in a matter of minutes or hours, not days or weeks.
Why CEREC is Popular
CEREC uses the latest CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/ Computer Aided Machinery) technology and can construct porcelain veneers, crowns, inlays, and onlays in just a single visit. This means you can have a better-looking teeth fast!
How is it done? It is done using a computer-aided model and an optical impression. The cosmetic dentist can make an optical impression by painting the tooth using a titanium dioxide powder. The powder enables the infrared waves from the camera to see the exact contours of the tooth. Because of this, a high resolution optical impression of your teeth is achieved. Then, a virtual replica of the tooth is displayed on a monitor beside the chair.
Before starting the procedure, your teeth will be evaluated to identify the best treatment for your specific needs. If a CEREC restoration is recommended, your tooth will undergo a preparation for the restoration. An optical impression of your tooth will be constructed. This high resolution optical impression will be utilized for producing a ceramic restoration that fits well inside the preparation.
An all-porcelain block is then placed in a milling chamber and a milled restoration is complete in just 15 minutes start to finish. The restoration will be tested for proper fit and color. The result is an amazing dental restoration that looks like your natural teeth.
